Jesus’ Teachings on the Signs of the Times

Understanding the times:

“When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ … You know how to interpret the sky’s appearance, but you can’t figure out the signs of the times.”
(Matthew 16:2–3)

Jesus pointed out how people could read natural signs but struggled to recognize spiritual ones—especially His role as the Messiah.

Early signs before the end:

  • Wars and rumors of wars
  • Famines, earthquakes, pestilence
  • False messiahs and deception
    (Matthew 24:4–8; Mark 13:5–8; Luke 21:8–11)

Jesus likened these to “birth pains,” suggesting they would become more frequent and intense.

  1. Moral and Spiritual Conditions

A rise in lawlessness and a decline in love:

“Because lawlessness will increase, the love of many will grow cold.”
(Matthew 24:12)

Apostasy and misleading teachings:

“The Spirit clearly says that in later times, some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and teachings of demons.”
(1 Timothy 4:1–2)

Selfishness and corruption:

“In the last days, there will be difficult times. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive…”
(2 Timothy 3:1–5)

  1. Signs in the World and Creation

Natural disasters: earthquakes, famines, plagues (Luke 21:11).

Heavenly signs:

“There will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars, and on the earth, nations will be in distress and confusion…”
(Luke 21:25–26)

Cosmic events before Christ’s return:

“The sun will be darkened, the moon will not shine, and the stars will fall from the sky…”
(Matthew 24:29)
